Helena Sofia Petersdotter

Helena Sofia was born in the village of Hornanäs, in the parish of Linneryd, in
1846. She was the middle child of Ingrid Mathisdotter and Peter Nilson.
Her older sister, Johanna, was three years older, and her younger sister Eva
was five years younger.
When Helena was 22 years old, she moved with her parents and younger sister
Eva to Siggahult. There, she lived with her family until her marriage to Nils
Johan Petersson.
Nils was 15 years older than Helena. He came from Fagrasjö, and was a
widower. His first wife died after only four months of marriage from a
cold. Nils was the oldest son of a Fagrasjö family, and took over the family
farm when his father died.
Helena and Nils had their first child in 1970 – Wilhelma Augusta. She was
followed two years later by August Gottfried. In 1874, Wilhelm Edwin was
born, but lived only 4 months. Three more children were born (one every
other year): Ida Matilda (1876), Anna Theresia (1878), and Franz Oskar
(1880). Their last child –Carl Emil - was born in 1886.
It wasn’t too long before the children began to leave home. In 1997, Helena’s
oldest daughter Wilhelmina married and moved to the nearby village of
Illareboda. Over the next fourteen years, Wilhelmina would bear seven
children. She died of cancer at age 44.
In 1902, Helena’s oldest son August Gottfried began farming in the same
village as Wilhelmina. He was not married, but apparently married sometime
around 1905. His only child was born in 1906. He moved back to Fagrasjö in
1914.
In 1903, Helena second son Frans Oscar moved to America. He remained
there for six years, returning to marry in 1910. He and his wife had four
children between 1911 and 1918, and took over the wife’s family farm in
Suttremala.
Ida Matilda married in 1911, and her first child was born shortly thereafter.
She had two more children by 1915. The family lived in Billa Södregårtd,
Hemmasjö until 1927.
Helena’s husband Nils died in 1910, at age 79. Helena remained in Fagrasjö
with the two children who still lived at home - Anna and Carl. Carl was in the
military. Anna had been married, but was divorced. She lived with Helena
until her death.
