Beata Kristina Magnusdotter
Beata Magnusdotter was born on November 20, 1847 in the village of
Nickalycke. She was the fourth child (third living child) of parents
Magnus Johanesson and Martha Lisa Isaksdotter. Her brother Franz was
four years old, and sister Johanna was three when she was born.
Beata was baptized on November 28, 1847. Witnesses to her baptism were
her aunt Lena Isaksdotter, farm-hand Johan Peterson from Sibbemåla,
Christina Isaksdotter, a farm-maid working in Nickalycke, and Johannes
Johansson (perhaps from Siggahult).
When Beata was four years old, a new sister Sophia was born, although she
lived only four months. Over the next ten years, two more brothers and
two more sisters were born, so Beata grew up in a large family of seven
children.
Beata was twenty-two years old when she married August Jonasson on the
9th of April, 1869. August was twenty-seven years old. He came from
Hästeback Norrege, a somewhat larger neighboring village.
The marriage record states that Beata was a farmer’s daughter. August was
designated as the hemmansegare (farm owner) of ¼ mantal of land in
Nickalycke. The record also shows that Beata’s father was present at the
wedding, and that there was no kinship between August and Beata prior to
marriage.
Beata’s first daughter Amanda Helena was born on July 7 1870. Slightly
more than one year later, her second daughter, Johanna Sophia was born on
October 27, 1871.
Beata then went through a tragic series of births. In August of 1873, Hilda
Charlotta was born and lived only eight months, dying in April, 1874. That
same year, a son Frans Johan was born. He lived only one month, dying in
October, 1874. The small village of Nickalycke had several other
children’s deaths in 1874, including the daughter of Beata’s brother Franz –
who interestingly was also named Hilda Charlotta - and who died in
December at three years old.
In 1875, Beata had another daughter, who she also named Hilda Charlotta.
This child lived approximately one and one-half years, dying of measles in
1877. A boy, named Frans Johan like his earlier brother, was born in
1877, and died about six months later of unknown causes.
Beata finally bore a child who lived. It was a girl - not surprisingly named
Hilda Charlotta – born in 1879. Beata had only one more child, Emily, who
lived just one month, dying in 1880. Beata and August now had three
daughters, and had lived through the deaths of five children.
During the first half of the 1880s, Beata was surrounded by family in
Nickalycke. Her father and mother still maintained a home in the village.
Both her brother Franz and sister Serafia, along with their large families,
farmed in Nickalycke.
However, in 1885, Beata’s life took one more tragic turn. Her husband
August died of gastritis at age 43. Beata was a 37 year old widow, with
three children and a farm to run. She appears to have hired a man to help
with the farm.
By 1995, Beata had retired, and daughter Johanna Sophia and her new
husband Carl Victor Nilsson had taken over the farm. Her older daughter
Amanda Helena had also married and moved to Hvida Södregård. Beata’s
youngest daughter Hilda Charlotta was unmarried, and moved to North
American in 1899.
Beata was remarried in 1902 to Peter Johan Jonasson. Peter was her
bachelor brother-in-law, who had worked for many years as a farm hand in
Hästebäck Södrege. He was two years older than Beata.
Beata Kristina Magnusdotter died on March 22, 1904 in Nickalycke at age
57. Her father, Magnus Johannesson died one year earlier at age 86.
Her mother, Martha Lisa Isaksdotter, lived for another five years.
