Johanna Maria Petersdotter
Johanna Maria was the first child of Peter Nilsson and Ingrid
Mattisdotter.     She was born in Hornanäs, in the parish of Linneryd, on
July 16, 1843.   Johanna’s family had been inhabitants of the village of
Hornanäs since the 1600s.   When she was born, there were three other
families living in the small farming village.

Three years after Johanna’s birth, a sister Helena Sofia was born.    Then
about five years later, a sister Eva Katarina was born.    The three
children appear to have had uneventful childhoods.    From time to time, a
farm maid or farm hand helped out with the work.   The household also
included Johanna’s grandmother, Helena Jonasdotter, who died when
Johanna was six years old.

In 1865, Johanna married Franz Nilsson from the neighboring village of
Hästaskalla.   The two farmed in Hornanäs for several  years.   In 1867,
they had their first child – Ida Matilda – who lived only nine months
before dying.

In 1868, Johanna’s family – her father, mother, and her two sisters - left
Hornanäs.    Johanna  and Franz took over the family farm of 3/16
mantal.   One year later, they had a second child – Emma Carolina – who
lived to have a large family of her own.

Carl Edward was born in 1871, and August Emil was born in 1873.    In
1874, Johanna and Franz left Hornanäs with their growing family, and
moved back to Franz’ hometown of Hästaskalla..   Apparently, Franz and
his older brother Johan Peter switched farms.   Johan moved to Hornanäs
for a brief period, and Franz took his place in Hästaskalla.

Hästeskalla was also a very small farming village.   Johanna and Franz
farmed ¼ mantal, which represented half of the land in Hästaskalla.
There were three other farming families living there, and up to four
inhyses (lodgers).

Daughter Jenny Sofia was born to Johanna and Franz in 1879, and son
Bror Oscar Severin was born in 1883.   A last child – Axel Arvid – was
born in 1886 and died nine months later.   By this time, Johanna and
Franz’ older children were reaching maturity.     Emma Carolina married
at age 18 in 1887, and moved to Stångsmåla with her new husband.

1897 brought more changes to the family.    Johanna, Franz and the three
younger children moved to Hästömåla to farm ¼ mantal.    Son Carl
Edward married in 1897, and ultimately moved to South Sandsjö.  Their
daughter Jenny Sofia had left in 1901 for an unknown destination, and
their son August Emil had moved to Tingsås in 1908.

By 1909, Franz and Johanna had retired, and their youngest living son,
Bror Oskar Severin and his new wife took over their farm.     Franz and
Johanna lived with Bror Oscar until their deaths.   Franz died in 1921 at
age 81.    Johanna died in 1929 at age 86.
